Professor Lucy Montgomery is the Interim Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor for the Faculty of Humanities at Curtin University.
From 2018 to 2025, Professor Montgomery was the Founder and Co-Lead of the Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative (COKI), a research project combining large-scale open datasets, cloud computing, and critical humanities perspectives to make research communities, networks, and shifts in knowledge landscapes visible at global scale. This includes asking questions about the communities and forms of value that remain invisible — who isn’t represented, and what isn’t captured — as well as identifying the approaches to analysis most likely to support productive conversations and positive change.
Montgomery trained as a China specialist at the University of Adelaide, before going on to complete a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies at Queensland University of Technology. She has worked in Australia and the UK, including as part of the team that founded Knowledge Unlatched: the world’s single largest source of funding for Open Access books.
She serves on multiple editorial and advisory boards, including as Chair of the Scientific Committee for the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB), as a member of the UWA Press Advisory Board, and on the OA Books Toolkit Editorial Advisory Board.
Professor Lucy Montgomery is Dean of Research in the Faculty of Humanities at Curtin University, where her research focuses on open knowledge and scholarly communication. Co-founder of the Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative, her work has received international recognition. She serves on multiple advisory boards and chairs the Scientific Committee for the Directory of Open Access Books.
