A snapshot of the Honours in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand

This research provides the sector with an overview of the current state of Honours in both Australia and New Zealand. It draws on survey data from 134 students and 57 conveners to better understand what is being offered, how the Honours is being studied, by who and why.

It provides insights based on convenor feedback as well as reflections shared at the 2024 DASSH conference where the research was discussed.

The Future of Honours project is a discussion about the need to explore and understand the purpose of the Honours in creating new generations of researchers, furthering careers and social impact. It’s centred around challenges and finding a way forward to sustain enrolments.

The findings provide insight into the perspectives of students and educators to understand the characteristics and underlying motivations driving Honours enrolment.

This study provides insight into the characteristics of the Honours degree which will provide a benchmark for future studies.
