DASSH President Professor Nick Bisley has written in The Canberra Times the government must repeal the Job-Ready Graduates scheme as a matter of urgency.
Under the policy Arts degrees will cost students up to $50,000 by 2025.
Nick argues it’s critical the government does not wait until the implementation of the Australian Tertiary Education Commission to make reforms.
We know that three years after graduating 90 per cent of Arts graduates have a job compared with the average of 92 per cent and their earnings are on par with the average of $83,500 at $81,300.
As Nick writes the amount students pay should be linked to the cost of teaching in their fields. It should not be linked to earnings which are highly variable over a long period of time.
“It is imperative that this flawed, inequitable and ineffective policy is wound back urgently.”
