Grievances are an increasingly complex aspect of higher education leadership, requiring careful consideration of policy, process and institutional practice. This interactive panel discussion explores approaches to responding to student concerns fairly, transparently and constructively. Bringing together perspectives from the Aotearoa Student Ombudsman alongside Australian and Aotearoa institutional leaders, the session examines common challenges, effective processes and practical strategies for managing grievances while supporting positive outcomes for students and universities. Participants will be encouraged to contribute questions and experiences in an open forum focused on shared learning and practical insights.
We are delighted to be joined by Professor Lisa Hanna, Pro Vice-Chancellor Students, Deakin University and Neil Ulrich, Executive Officer (Academic Complaints, Appeals and Policy) from Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University.
This session will provide an opportunity for colleagues to discuss emerging issues and practical approaches to managing grievances in higher education. Through shared experiences and sector perspectives, participants will explore common challenges, institutional responses and opportunities to strengthen fair, consistent and effective practice.
